Star Fest was founded five years ago as a celebration of Black Indigenous and greater First Nations Two Spirit, Trans and Queer creative wellbeing and heritage. Initially Star Fest was a year-round program supporting ten collective based projects or individually curated exhibitions that culminated in an annual summer film festival showcasing resident artists work and award winning films from established filmmakers. Classes, workshops, performances, artists talks, installations and plays have all been a part of the season’s events.
Today Tauraro is a nine-month residency and accelerator program that provides microgrants to established artists and awards technical, financial, career and mentorship guidance to two new creatives, helping them workshop and produce their visions.
Tauraro Artist in Residency and Film Festival also holds an award ceremony called the Troscars (the trans and queer version of the Oscars), honoring exemplary and engaging films each season and a life-time achievement award to a luminary in their creative field.
